The origin of the "ichimatsu" pattern dates back to the mid-Edo period.
The name was given to this item when the kabuki actor "Sanogawa Ichimatsu" wore it as a stage costume and popularized it. Influenced by him, people of the time incorporated this pattern into their kimonos, and the design became widely loved even by common people.
While it retains the details of an authentic work shirt, such as triple-needle chain stitching, it also features a three-dimensional pattern based on the structure of the human body.
This is an attractive piece with a unique aging process in which the checkered pattern becomes more prominent the more you wear it.
