The sweatshirt was transformed from a wool-knit material to a cotton material with a looped backing, and evolved into the daily wear of the American public as a ‘sweat-absorbing shirt’. The military and military academies, where hard training was a daily routine, were quick to take notice, and the sweatshirts came to be sold at base shops scattered across the USA. The material has a unique flexibility because it is made using a tubular suspension knitting machine, which knits the material under uneven tension, just as it did at the time. Stitching is by a four-needle flat seamer suitable for underwear, etc. The V-shaped gusset is sewn with rib material on top of the body, commonly known as a ‘beaten V’ specification.
