The 72nd Bombardment Squadron, part of the 5th Bombardment Group aka the "Bomber Barons" establised in 1918, is the oldest bombardment squadron in USAF history, and currently operating as the 72nd Test and Evaluation Squadron. Prior to World War II, they were deployed to Hawaii for training and participation in Army and Navy maneuvers. During the 1935 eruption of the Mauna Loa volcano in Hawaii, bombs dropped by the troop around the volcano redirected lava flow away from nearby towns and helped save city of Hilo. The leather patches on this jacket were personally customized by soldiers at the time, with the 5th Bombardment Group hand-painted and the 72nd Squadron stenciled.
