The M-51 parka is an evolution of the pullover type M-48 parka that has been developed since World War II, and was mainly issued to US Army soldiers in the cold regions of the Korean War. Since this battlefield is a cold area that the US military has never experienced before, a layering system was adopted to wear over normal equipment. The shell of the earliest model (1951) was a thick cotton satin fabric, but in the models after 1952, it was changed to cotton nylon oxford fabric in order to review the cost and reduce weight. The cuffs have a built-in rubber strap adjuster belt to improve the sealability, and the pocket bag is made of wool material with heat retention.
